This is the Waiuta Catholic Church. I do know the proper name for it but can't think of it right now. There were two churches in waiuta - Anglican % Catholic. The Anglicans shared theirs with other denominations - Presbytarians etc., the Catholics shared theirs with the Catholics.
This building is now a honeymoon lodge up at Poerua, beyond Moana - appropriate end for a church.
NEway, two parishioners, Tony Anisy & Bill Hines, were once painting the roof. It was a really hot day, so they decided to have a beer. They pooled their money and Bill got down, tidily putting the ladders on the ground, and went off to the pub to buy some bottles.
When he arrived there he got into a game of 45's, (West Coast card game), forgot all about his mate and left him sitting up the roof for 6 hours. (The gambling in Waiuta was legendary!)
Tony spent the time sitting on the roof calling out to passers-by that "Silly bugger Bill put the ladders down."
They kept telling him that "Silly bugger Bill will have to put them back then."
They say that the job went on for two or three weeks, but there was very little talking done after that day.
There's lots of stories about the church, but - that's enough for today.
cheers
