The lady in the blue top is Mrs. Rosina Caldana, nee Rubbo. She brought her daughter, son in law and Aussie grandchildren to see us today.
Rosina was born in Italy, and her parents brought her to NZ in 1935. Her father worked on the gold dredge at Hukawai, down in the valley behind Waiuta, so she had to stay up in Waiuta, for school, from Monday to Friday & only went home on weekends.
During the week, she boarded at Ronchi's - they had the butcher's shop in Waiuta.
We just never know who we're going to see next! Very cool.
Actually, there were quite a few Italian miners in Waiuta, and some of them were homebrewers. Being Italian and fond of their wine, they brought out a special type of blackberry and grew them for winemaking. There are still remnants of the 'Italian Blackberries' growing in Waiuta today.
Maybe i should grow some?
cheers
